Are you an apparel exporter? Have you ever had the nightmare of discovering color deviation, size tolerance issues or excessive loose threads right before bulk shipment? Once the goods are loaded and sailed, rework becomes nearly impossible. You end up losing huge sums on ocean freight, delayed lead time and, worst of all, your buyer’s trust.

Hiring a professional third-party inspection company for pre-shipment inspection lets you catch all quality defects at the factory, before the goods leave the premises.

Today we’ll walk you through our on-site T-shirt inspection service. As an experienced third-party testing and inspection provider, we will cover what we inspect, how we conduct inspections and which standards we follow.

1. Before Inspection: Confirm Standards First — No Subjective Judgement

Before our inspector arrives at the factory, we confirm three key documents with you: the approved sample, size specification sheet and inspection criteria (normally AQL 2.5 / 4.0 sampling, the globally accepted AQL standard). Without an approved sample, there is no reference for color matching. Without a size chart, there is no basis for tolerance limits. Without agreed sampling rules, inspection coverage becomes random.

Once standards are locked in, our inspector heads to the factory fully equipped: measuring tape, fabric weight scale, color swatch, light box for color assessment, small scissors, infrared thermometer and documentation board.

We offer on-site inspection services covering major manufacturing hubs: Guangdong, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Ningbo. Fast response available for the Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta regions.

2. Four Core Stages of On-Site Inspection

1. Visual & Workmanship Inspection (Highest Priority)

This is where most quality issues occur. Under natural light or standardized light sources, our inspectors check each piece carefully:

  • Fabric defects: holes, oil stains, color streaks, slubs, snagging, barré effect, color shading (within one garment, between front/back panels or left/right panels)

  • Stitching quality: even stitch density (12–14 stitches per 3cm for T-shirts), no skipped stitches, broken stitches or loose threads; lock stitches at start and end of seams

  • Finishing details: flat rib collar, aligned double-needle stitching on cuffs and hems, no twisted shoulder seams, correct placement of main label and care label, trimmed loose threads

  • Print / embroidery (if applicable): correct print position, good color fastness, no peeling, tight embroidery stitches

2. Dimension Measurement

We measure all critical points against your size chart: body length, shoulder width, chest circumference (half chest ×2), sleeve length, cuff width, hem width and collar width. Normal tolerance for finished knit garments is ±1~1.5cm. Any measurement outside tolerance is marked non-conforming. Sampling quantity follows AQL rules: starting from 32 pcs for standard lots; larger orders require larger sample sizes.

3. On-Site Fabric & Performance Spot Tests

Quick field tests at the factory, no waiting time for lab reports:

  • Fabric weight test: cut a standard swatch and weigh it to verify the specified GSM (e.g. 180g/m², 220g/m²)

  • Rubbing color fastness test: rub the printed or dark area 10 times with a wet white cloth to check for staining

  • Pilling resistance check: repeatedly rub the fabric surface to observe serious pilling

  • Dimensional stability quick check: stretch chest and length slightly and check recovery after release

  • Odor check: check for strong irritating odor (potential sign of formaldehyde or harmful dye residue)

4. Packing & Loading Supervision

Many buyer complaints come from packaging errors. We verify correctness of hang tags, price tickets and care labels; check folding method, printed polybags, carton quantity, color & size assortment matching the packing list. We also provide container loading supervision service. We monitor packing from finished goods inspection to container stuffing to prevent wrong loading, missing cartons and moisture damage inside containers.

3. What Happens If Goods Fail Inspection? — Report Issued On-Site, No Open-Ended Issues

Our work does not end with a few photos. A formal inspection report will be issued, including total sampled quantity, count of critical / major / minor defects, full size measurement data, close-up photos of defects and final result: PASS / PENDING / FAIL.

  • PASS: Defects within acceptable limits, shipment approved

  • PENDING: Marginal result, waiting for your final confirmation

  • FAIL: Defects exceed acceptance limit. The factory must carry out rework. We can return for re-inspection after rework is completed.

Critical issues are communicated directly with factory supervisors on site: required corrections, quantity to rework and rework deadline are clearly recorded in the report for closed-loop tracking. Nothing is left as verbal agreement.

4. Beyond T-shirts — One-Stop Third-Party QC for All Product Categories

We are a professional third-party QC and inspection company. Our service covers far more than apparel: Amazon FBA pre-shipment inspection, toy inspection, children’s products inspection, indoor & outdoor furniture inspection, home goods inspection, small home appliance inspection, baby products inspection, general household goods, electrical products, kitchenware, power tools, lighting and medical device inspection.

Besides product inspection, we also offer supplier audit, factory audit, QC system setup, full sorting service, and special pre-inspection for Mexico PEO origin verification. We are your reliable third-party QC partner.

5. Why Spend a Small Inspection Fee to Avoid Massive Claim Losses?

A T-shirt may cost only USD 2~3 ex-factory, but an entire container rejected due to severe color shading can trigger huge losses: ocean freight, demurrage, return shipment or destruction costs — all far higher than inspection fees. Worse still, a major quality failure may cost you the buyer permanently.

On-site pre-shipment inspection is simple: invest a modest inspection fee to mitigate the risk of costly claims and lost orders later. You don’t need to travel to factories or stay up late monitoring production lines. Our qualified QC inspectors follow your standards and guard your quality before shipment.
